An Introduction to Glasgow... Glasgow has probably seen more changes in the past two decades than almost any other UK city. From a declining industrial city with widespread pessimism about the future, Glasgow has been transformed into a forward-looking city and one of the hippest spots in Europe. There has always been an enormous sense of pride in the city’s history – the long list of inventors, engineers, writers and architects of the past century were part of the driving force of industrialisation, tamed by socially progressive values in the ‘second city’ of the British Empire. With ports on the banks of the Clyde giving access to the Irish Sea, Glasgow was an important shipbuilding centre, and well known for the massive engineering works where the locomotives of the nation were produced. Its former wealth can still be seen in the Classical architecture of Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson and Art Nouveau style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a heritage that was at the heart of the decision to choose Glasgow as the 1999 UK City of Architecture and Design.
