An Introduction to Detroit... Detroit is the largest city in Michigan and the tenth-largest in the United States. A sprawling industrial metropolis situated across the Detroit River from Windsor, Ontario, the Detroit area encompasses three counties (Wayne, Oakland and Macomb) and 5247 sq km (2026 sq miles). The oldest city in the Midwest, it was founded in 1701 next to a narrow strait (d’etroit) by the French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. It remained a fur trading centre and minor port town until the Industrial Revolution arrived in the mid-1800s. In the early years of the 20th century, Detroit attracted motor barons Henry Ford, the Dodge brothers, Henry Leland, Chevrolet and others, and it is still the epicentre of the gigantic US automobile industry. Detroit is also famous as the home of two major popular music trends: Motown, the enduringly popular soul music style exemplified by Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and The Supremes, and techno, the hard-edged futuristic dance sound that has dominated 90s nightclub culture.
