An Introduction to Boston... Boston, the capital of Massachusetts, is located in the east of the state on Boston Bay at the mouth of the Charles River. It is the largest city in New England and is the commercial, financial and cultural hub of this six-state region. The city is divided into 19 districts, many of which have a distinct ethnic identity, and bear testimony to Boston’s sometimes troubled racial history. Founded in 1630, Boston is one of the oldest cities in the United States and played a vital role in the opposition to colonial rule that led to the American War of Independence. Boston is perhaps the most European of American cities, with crooked, cobblestone streets and colonial and Victorian architecture. Its manageable size and interesting history make it perfect for exploring on foot and have earned it the nickname the ‘Walking City’. Boston’s power was traditionally based on her role as a major port; more recently the city has become known for medical research, computer technology and financial services. With Harvard University on its doorstep, and several others universities within the city itself, Boston is also an important national and international centre for higher education.
