An Introduction to Barcelona... Accommodation in Catalonia is state-regulated and divided into two categories: hotels (one to two stars) and hostels (one to two stars). To qualify as a hotel, an establishment must offer en-suite facilities with every room. Hotel prices vary throughout the year; special events, trade fairs and conventions in the city will cause prices to rise drastically but discounts may be available in low season and at weekends. Top hotels are somewhat cheaper than their equivalents in other major European cities but in general accommodation is quite pricey compared to the rest of Spain. There is a 7% hotel tax (IVA). Accommodation around La Rambla and Barri G̣tic tends to be old-fashioned and charming but without the modern comforts of the newest hotels along the Diagonal. In addition to hotels and hostels there are a number of apartment-hotels in Barcelona offering high-quality self-catering accommodation.
