There are nearly 31,000 hotel rooms available in Athens and although the city can seem full to bursting in midsummer, there are usually enough beds to suit the needs of most travellers. The EOT regulates and classifies hotels throughout the country according to size of rooms, amenities available and services offered. In 1999, approximate rates for a double room ranged from Dr3500 at the cheapest hotels to well over Dr45,000 for luxury hotels. It is important to select an area of Athens before making a booking; hotels in the Pláka may enjoy a central location, but tend to be very noisy. As an alternative to hotels, villas and furnished apartments can be booked through travel agents. The Hellenic Chamber of Hotels (web site: http://www.users.otenet.gr/~grhotels) has a reservations desk in the National Bank of Greece at Karageorgi Servias 2 (tel: (01) 323 7193). Reservations can be made 0830-1400 Monday to Thursday; 0830-1330 Friday and 0900-1230 Saturday.
